Valeria Mari, “Catchup and Affinity in Women’s Exhibitions: Re-evaluating the Feminaissance Links between Global Feminisms and Another Energy”, in Deepwell, K. (Ed.), Re-Evaluations in Feminism and Contemporary Art: Volume 1, Vernon Press, 2026.
The volume Re-Evaluations in Feminism and Contemporary Art brings together academic contributions from around the world to rethink the role of feminism in contemporary art over the past fifty years across artistic practices, activisms, and global perspectives, offering new insights into artists, exhibitions, and transnational collaborations. My chapter, “Catchup and Affinity in Women’s Exhibitions: Re-evaluating the Feminaissance Links between Global Feminisms and Another Energy,” examines an exhibition central to the “feminaissance” Global Feminisms (Brooklyn Museum, 2007) and compares it to the Mori Art Museum’s first all-woman show, Another Energy (2021), considering the dynamics between “catch-up” and “affinity” in their exhibition displays and selection strategies. The essay further questions whether global women’s exhibitions foster meaningful inclusivity or merely fulfill diversity quotas, arguing for a transnational affinity-based curation that actively confront colonial legacies and hierarchical categorizations rather than relying on symbolic identity-based representational models.
I am truly delighted that this collective work makes a meaningful contribution to the vital and complex conversations around feminism in visual arts. Don’t miss the chance to get this brilliant publication—one to hold, read, and return to again and again!
